Greenville, SC (CNS) -- Bob Jones University has dropped its ban on interracial dating after the school's policy became a major issue in Republican primary contests.

'As of today, we've dropped the rule,' said Bob Jones III, during an appearance on CNN's Larry King Live Friday night.

Campaigning in New York State, where polls show he is locked in a statistical dead heat with Arizona Sen. John McCain, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, who appeared at the school while campaigning in South Carolina, said, 'I'm please they've changed the policy...the university has made the right decision.'

The university was Bush's first stop in the Palmetto State after his 19 point New Hampshire primary loss to McCain. For his part, McCain used the appearance to hammer at Bush in South Carolina, and later in Michigan and Washington state, where, in a series of 'Catholic Alert' telephone calls, he insisted the appearance indicated an anti-Catholic bias on the part of the Bush campaign. The school has also been criticized for statements made by some officials regarding the Catholic Church.

When informed of the school's action, McCain said simply, 'It's the right thing to do.'

In explaining the decision to revoke the ban, Jones said the administration was concerned about the impact the controversy was having on its students and graduates. 'We're being defined as a racist school. That's all the media talks about.'

The interracial dating ban dates to the1970s, when it began admitting African-American students. In 1983, Bob Jones University lost its tax-exempt status after the Internal Revenue Service cited it for racial discrimination. The decision culminated a 13-year battle between the IRS and the Greenville-based school.
